The Vega Baja Premier Golf League is the largest and most successful golf league in Spain, if not Europe.

St Andrews
It was formed in 2000 by Ivie Davies (Secretary) and Ron Nicholson (Treasurer) to   meet the need of Golf Societies on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida for  competitive team golf, and since then it has gone from strength to strength.

In the 2007/2008 season the VBPGL was expanded to three Divisions to accommodate more teams. Each Society submits a maximum of 25 players from which a team of eight players are selected for each match.

The fixtures are played on selected quality courses throughout the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida, in and around Alicante and Murcia.
The format is a Combined Stableford, with three points for a win in the pairs and three bonus points for the highest team total points score.

Handicaps are registered and controlled using the European Golf Associations (EGA) System of Handicapping, and by the Real Federación Español de Golf (RFEG), the Slope System.

Promotion and relegation issues operate between the three divisions, there is also a Golden Club of the Year Award, for the individual player who has the best average points score for the maximum number of games in the season. It has now reverted to two Divisions and in 2011 it was decided to use the Match Play format modified to ensure all 18 holes are played.

The success of the VBPGL has been so great, that it is used for the selection of the European Team that played Spain in a Ryder Cup style event and came out winners in 2007 and 2008. In addition an Inter League tournament called The Garay Cup, is played each year against The Costa Blanca News League (north Alicante), and the Vega Baja Premier Golf League has won the trophy five times since its inauguration.

Golf courses that have been selected as venues since the League's formation are, Alenda Golf, Altorreal Golf, Alicante Golf, El Plantio Golf, Hacienda del Alamo, La Finca Golf, La Manga Golf, Polaris World Golf (La Torre - El Valle), Roda Golf Resort, La Serena Golf, Peraleja Golf, Mar Menor Golf Village, Font del Llop Golf Resort, Las Ramblas Golf, Saurines de la Torre Golf.

Golf is a very important part of leisure activity in Spain and The Vega Baja Premier Golf League provides an active competitive part of golf and the ability to play the various golf courses throughout the regions of the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida, at the same time providing the golf venues with a regular supply of golfers who care about the game.
