VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE Gala Presentation Dinner 5th June Restaurante La Perdiz, Pozo Aledo, near San Javier. On 5th June the Vega Baga Premier Golf League held its Gala Dinner Dance for the fourth year in succession at the Restaurante La Perdiz, Pozo Aledo, near San Javier. This venue cannot be surpassed for its service, quality and quantity of food and drink; to a man (and woman) we thoroughly enjoyed a seven, yes a seven course meal, complemented by a wide choice of wines and beers. So it was that League teams got together now to applaud the champions and have a thoroughly good time, when the players and their partners could let their hair down and the competitive spirit of the League could be put to one side until next season. This night rounded off the season with the presentation of trophies to the victors.
During the course of the season a record is kept of every player’s Stableford points score and the individual player with the best average points score from the maximum number of games receives the prestigious trophy, The Gold Club of the Year Award, along with a replica trophy. The 2008/9 season winner was Paul Rooney of Katie Reilly Golf Society with a total points score of 239, averaging 34.1 points over the seven games. Coincidentally this was exactly the same score and average as that of the previous year's winner from Katie Reilly Golf Society. During this past season there were only five games and Paul Rooney proved his consistency, scoring 163 points to average 32.60 points. Gavin Riddall, also a Katie Reilly team member, matched Paul’s performance, so they share the trophy. It is this team consistency that has made Katie Reilly Golf Society such a strong side; in three years it has provided four Golden Club of the Year winners. However, spare a thought for Eurogolf’s Bill Martin, he missed just one game and yet still managed a very creditable 35.25 points average. This proves again, if proof were really needed, that the scoring system and the handicapping used by the League are as fair and as accurate as they can be, when the best players are still not averaging par.
Peter Deaves, Katie Reilly’s Captain and now President, accepted the “A” Division Trophy, his Society finishing a clear 10 points ahead of second place San Miguel Golf Society. He will also captain the VBPGL Garay Cup Team in September.
Last season Mar Menor Golf Society’s Captain, Derek Jefferies, assured everybody that winning the “C” Division championship was just the start for them. How right he was, with John Sell collecting the “B” Division champion’s trophy, holding off Las Ramblas Golf Society by a mere five points.
Rocajuna Golf Society won the “C” Division from Wolfpack Golf Society and Denis McCormack took the honours as Captain.
All the recipients of the spoils made a point of thanking Secretary, Ivie Davies, and Treasurer, Ron Nicholson, for all their hard work in organising the League so professionally and for organising such an excellent evening.
Secretary, Ivie Davies, announced that the 2010/11season would be even more competitive, as the League is going to revert to two Divisions with more games to play. Thanks should go to the Secretaries, Captains and players for making the Vega Baja Premier Golf League the most successful and competitive golf League in Spain, if not Europe. Well, the 2009/10 season has ended and following the summer break the new season will start in September with The Garay Cup at the new Las Colinas de Campoamor Golf Resort. Where The Vega Baja Premier Golf League representative team take on The Costa Blanca North League, and are looking to take the trophy for a record breaking 5th successive year.
So, to all you golfers, have a great summer and enjoy this great game of Golf.
